There are four
basic steps to planning a career.
The first step is to know about yourself and the things you like
to do and what you do not want to do. You will spend
an average of 2,080 hours in your job. Therefore, it is
essential to make a
well- informed decision about your career
choice. |
1. Self-Inventory
2. Options
3. Match
4. Action |

The next step is to look at
your options for career choices. The Occupational Outlook
Handbook is one resource to look up many careers. There
are thousands of career options in various fields.
It is up to you to research the one that best fits your interest
and skills. Take a Career Educational course while still
in high school. This can be a sure way to find out if you
have what it takes! |
Gathering
information may seem easy, but experience is one tool that can
prove to be invaluable when making a career choice. Job
Shadowing or Volunteering is a great way to get the experience
in the field of your choice.
Talk to your Guidance Counselor or Career Specialist to help you
find an area that will best fit your personality and career
goals.
Take courses while still in high school to help you
further your education. Dual Enroll and take FREE
college courses at DBCC, FCTI, SFCC, and SJRCC.
Check out the colleges to see which ones offer the courses you
will need to get your certificate, license or degree. |

Now is the time to put all this
into action.
Write down your short term goals (what you
can do today) and long term goals (where you see yourself in the
next 5-10 years). This does not mean you can't change your
mind, but it helps to put you on track to reaching a successful
goal that you can enjoy and profit from in the future.
Be sure to keep these written goals, and check them often to see
just how you are doing in meeting your career goals.
